Workshop 04
.NET: The Programmer's Perspective
Abstract
Microsoft's new .NET technology presently attracts significant attention
in the OO community. Much of the push behind .NET technology has
been directed at such end-user applications as Web Services, but .NET also
provides, through the ".NET framework", a set of tools and facilities of
interest to software developers. This workshop will review pros and cons
of the .NET framework as seen by programmers. Scientifically sound contributions
are welcome from both supporters and critics of the approach.
We are looking for both experience reports from developers having applied
the .NET technology, highlighting the benefits gained and the obstacles
encountered, and for conceptual studies from researchers and teachers.
Possible topics for discussion (non-exhaustive list):
-
.NET as an architectural framework for software development; requirement
analysis, design, contractual specification, implementation, composition,
maintenance, reuse.
-
.NET as a workbench for program development tools.
-
.NET as a multilanguage platform for a smooth combination of individual
programming languages; from COBOL to Smalltalk, C++, Eiffel, Java, Visual
Basic, and, finally, to C#.
-
.NET as a unifying thread for language compilation; MSIL as powerful intermediate
language between compiler front-ends and back-ends.
We want to offer a forum for discussion of pros and cons of .NET, with
the following format:
-
Two introductory talks from invited speakers.
-
Short presentations of contributed peer-reviewed talks (up to 10).
-
Moderated discussions in working groups, pros and cons (.NET concepts considered
from an academic point of view; the topic considered from an industrial
developers' point of view; experience reports).
-
Short brainstorming sessions. Concluding, general session.
A pre-workshop exchange forum for the authors of accepted contributions
will be established.
Main Topics
-
.NET
-
.NET framework
-
.NET pros and cons
-
.NET concepts considered from an academic point of view; the topic considered
from an industrial developers' point of view; experience reports
Paper Submission
Persons interested to attend should send a position paper about their involvement
with and their attitude regarding .NET, what area of .NET describes their
involvement (academic researcher / academic teacher / developer / consultant
/ application expert). Papers will be peer-reviewed. An important criterion
is technical soundness and scientific relevance. The reviewing committee
will look for a balanced set of speakers and contributions.
